Summary

Regency era England, with modern technology, and the fountain of youth.

The people

Appearance

Many Sulimerans have markings on their face, which are largely ceremonial/cultural, but permanent. They are something akin to a tattoo.

They are applied to a child at a ceremony that is something like a christening – a dedication to Sulis. Even atheistic Sulimeran will undergo this procedure as someone who doesn’t wear any markings is seen as strange and untrustworthy – the markings denote your station in life, and the particular colour or pattern is determined by your class. They are removable, in the rare instances where people progress (or, in some circumstances, fall from grace) they are removed and reapplied in another ceremony welcoming the citizen to their new class. People of the class in the local area often attend these ceremonies regardless of any connection to the individual, in order to welcome them to the ‘group’.

Beliefs

Organised religion is non-existent on Sulimer, the few Sulimerans who do worship one/some of the gods from Sulimer’s history, and it tends to be for personal reasons. Religious belief is not derided or outlawed, it is more seen in a similar fashion to the modern day Wiccan movement.

Personalities

Sulimerans tend to be very forthright and open with their opinions amongst people of the same social class. This stems from the openness of communication and the general feeling amongst Sulimerans to be unified against external influences.

When dealing with people from a different social class, they are more reserved in their communication, but are very respectful of people from different classes (including when moving down the social ladder). This stems from Sulimerans being very aware of the duties and responsibilities of people in different classes to keep society moving forward together.

Sulimerans have also often been considered suspicious, to the point of being paranoid. This was due to the constant threat of infiltration and terrorism (such as those from Hades/Tuchalla, or those who sought to return to the dark ages of Sulimer). This has been split into two groups during the occupation of Sulimer, based on if they managed to flee Sulimer or not.

  • Those who fled are more willing to accept external help, but are suspicious of people’s motives for providing said help.
  • Those who remained are more self-reliant, but are less concerned with the motives, and more concerned about their actions.

Professions

Sulimer has all of the professions that you would find on Earth today, with a few exceptions.

There are fewer “media celebrities” due to the lack of visual recorded media, such as films and television. However, artists and other people who create content tend to be more well known.

There are fewer doctors and nurses, due to the general wellbeing and longevity of Sulimerans. However, there are more phycologists and counsellors for similar reasons. Similarly, there is a lot of support for mental health support.

There are more manual labourers, such as builders and miners, especially following the liberation of Sulimer in 2022.

Until 2014, there was no professional military on Sulimer, with the job of soldiering being seen as the lowest class of job known. The Sulimer Security Service (S3) took on a role of Police Force, Intelligence Agency and reaction force where needed.

Interaction

Greetings

Courtesies

  • Always help those who ask.
    • Knowing the limtations of your knowledge is an important thing, and should nevber be derided. If someone asks you for help, or an explination, then you should help them to fill thatlack of knowledge.
    • But only do so if directly asked.

Faux Pas

  • Telling a Sulimeran how to do something, without being directly asked.
    • Sulimerans have great respect for people who are specialised in a role. And as such, they trust that the specialist knows how to achieve the goal set to them.
    • To tell someone how to do their job, you are showing that you have no respect for their knowledge and experience, which you yourself are unlikely to have. In addition, you are expressing that you feel that person is incompetent.
  • Using other people’s gear
    • Sulimerans place great emphesis on the appearance of an individual and groups. A person’s appearance, style, and belongings are just as much a part of their personality as how they act. In fact, these things become intertwined.
    • Clothing and possessions become an extension of the person or group who they are readily identifiable with, and in a way become a representation of them and what they believe. As such, using or displaying those things becomes the same as flying the flag of that person or group.
    • “To adopt the equipment of the enemy is to adopt the beliefs of the enemy”

The society

Art / Writing

Due to the longevity of Sulimerans, their approach to the creative arts is deeper than those of other worlds. They prefer more esoteric and thought provoking pieces of art than simple depictions of the world around them. Music, literature, paintings, and scultpures are more popular, as Sulimerans like to contemplate what the artist was trying to say with their work, or what ideas it invokes in the viewer.

As an extension of the fact that Sulimerans tend to not like having things dictated to them, a lot of their artwork is the type that relies a lot upon the imagination of the observer. This has meant that whilst Sulimerans do have visual broadcasting technology, they have never developed television or film as a form of entertainment. Even stage plays tend to lean more toward operatic and ballet than more direct forms like Shakespeare.

Culinary

Sulimer’s staple crops are maize and rice. Wheat does not exist on Sulimer, as such, all Sulimeran foods are gluten free (Sulimerans cannot process gluten).

The closest earth-based equivalent would be a fusion of Mexican and Greek foods. Alcoholic drinks include Bourbon and Cider.

Government

As Sulimer is dotted with thousands of islands of varying sizes, each of these became their own little fiefdoms and territories, which eventually banded together under a common purpose.

Each island with a population of 1,000 has some form of organised governance (a Local Court). The exact form of governance varies depending on the local situation and customs, and are all democratic or similar, in nature. Smaller islands tend to group themselves together to reach the 1,000 person threshold for representation. Local Courts tend to have authority over matters relating to lower-class roles and work

Each Local Count has an elected Earl who will attend a Regional Court. Each of the 8 Regional Courts are made up of anywhere from a dozen to a hundred Local Courts. These deal with matters of a wider and more significant impact, but also ensure that there is uniformity in governance across their region. Regional Courts also have overview of matters relating to middle-class roles and work

Whilst the Regional Courts tend to cover the majority of judicial and legislative work, there is also the Court of Sulis, which acts as the final chamber for decision making and legislation. Each Regional Court has an elected Duke, who represents them in the Court of Sulis. The Court of Sulis also tends to focus more on matters that related to Upper class roles and work.

The eight regions are:

  1. Hallen
  2. Regis
  3. Austis
  4. Estoval
  5. Ustos
  6. Laseath
  7. Voslay
  8. Soata

The Court of Sulis is presided over the the Regent of Sulimer, who is elected by the members of the Court of Sulis. At each level of representation, the representative (Earl, Duke, or Regent) does not need to be a member of the relevant court, but instead is a person who has been chosen and elected by that Court to be their representative, usually from a group of voluteers which can include representatives from that court.

The Regent of Sulimer is comparable to a monarch, insomuch that they ratify any laws, and act as the final member of the judiciary in all cases. However, they do not have the authority to create any legislations of their own.

Settlements / Buildings

Nearly every settlement of Sulimer is costal in nature, with there being very few settlements being located without a view of the ocean.

The architectural style of Sulimer is very similar to regency-era Britain (such as Bath). Elegant buildings made from a variety of natural tones, large blocks of stone, with intricate carvings. Pillars and large spacious rooms are also common. Buildings tend to be built in terraced rows that sweep and curve to follow natural terrain, or to provide stunning views of the landscape.

Whilst most Sulimeran homes do not have gardens of their own, they will have communal spaces and plenty fo greenary nearby. Sculpted gardens with verandas and statues can be found dotted around Sulimeran towns.

Most islands on Sulimer tend to only have couple of villages or towns located on them. The larger islands will have a dozen settlements scattered along it’s coast. These towns and villages tend not to be too populous, with most having a population between 1,000 and 10,000.

The eight regions of Sulimer each have a capital city, which tends to be in the region of 200 – 400,000. Adelphi, the capital of Hallen, and the location of the Court of Sulis is the most populous city on Sulimer with a population of around 1,000,000 people.

Social Classes

Sulimer has a fairly strict class structure. It’s not without the ability to move up but it can be quite hard. Those in the higher classes have certain expectations and responsibilities and proper social etiquette is very strictly observed. Gender roles are fairly equal, the head of the family is decided by temperament and competency rather than gender, and families can be made up of any combination of people. It’s your class, rather than your gender, that enforces the kind of roles you take in society.

Sulimeran classes are primerially based upon the work that a person does, not their wealth or the circumstances of their birth. There are two major factors that determine your social class:

  • Whether your role creates or adds (higher), whether if it maintains and repairs, or if it destroys or removes (lower).
  • Whether your role focuses on life (higher), society, or the material world (lower).

This leads to there being nine distinct classes in Sulimeran society in three major groupings:

  1. Higher class – Those who create or add to life
  2. Mid Higher – Those who create or add to society
  3. Low Higher – Those who create or add to the material world
  4. Upper Middle – Those who maintain life
  5. Middle class – Those who maintain society
  6. Lower Middle – Those who maintain or repair the material world
  7. Upper Low – Those who remove or destroy from the material world
  8. Mid Low – Those who remove or destroy from society
  9. Lower Class – Those who remove or destroy life

There are some nuances to this scale, with roles that cover multiple areas taking it’s class proportionally from it’s duties. Social mobility is very limited within Sulimeran society, but not unheard of. Being promoted within a job is likely to lead to more senior roles within the same job type, but unlikely to result ins someone moving from (for example) a manual labourer to a manager.

One aspect to the social structure of Sulimer that is different to that on Earth is that the financial compensation for a role increases the lower down the class structure you go. This tends to be because there are other benefits to being in a higher class which tends to reduce the amount of money needed by that person. In addition, the satisfaction of the role plays an important factor into this. Someone who is in a higher class is more satisfied by their job, and has more available to them, but someone in a lower class recieves greater financial compensation for the fact that their work is less desirable.

Warfare

Until Sulimer started to unify after it’s dark age, each island nation had a form of military, usually a navy. However, with the unification of Sulimer, the need for a military force vanished. As such, Sulimer has not had a professional military in over 1,000 years.

However, Sulimer has always been aware of the threat of infiltration, terrorism, and disorder. As such, Sulimer has always had a well built Police force and Intelligence Agency, today known as the Sulimer Security Service (S3). This agency formed from early groups similar to the Spanish Inquisition that were active during the dark ages, acting against the machinations of the various cults and associated Dark Gods.

As Sulimer reached into space and discovered the hostile nature of their neighbouring planet (Tuchalla), S3‘s duties expanded to help protect the expanding space programme and asteroid mining facilities, as well as intercepting attacks from Tuchalla on occasion.

During the occupation of Sulimer, the surviving members of S3 formed a resistance movement which has led to an expansion of S3 to include a more concerted Self Defence Force.

Technology

Has access to limited (non-Subspace) FTL communication systems.

One of the main things which marks Sulimer as being “different to Earth” is their medical knowledge. Due to a mixture of skills and natural elements, Sulimer has conquered most illnesses and medical issues. There is no common cold, cancer is immediately curable, and death from illness is almost unheard of.

This mainly has been due to a naturally occurring liquid known as “Aqua Vitae” (Water of Life) which vastly increases the body’s ability to heal itself. There are numerous other benefits from using Aqua Vitae, when it is properly and appropriately prepared.

This also contributes to Sulimerans having an average lifespan of 250 years.

Reach

  • Colonisers: During the Occupation of Sulimer, there were several refugee camps set up by the displaced Sulimerans. Most of these have since been dismanteld, and most Sulimerans have returned home. The settlement on Kellimar, the largest of the refugee camps, has remained as the first Sulimeran colony. There were talks about settling on Tuchalla, following it’s abandonment by the Challans, but this idea was quickly scrapped.
  • Explorers: Sulimerans had never left their homeworld until the Occupation. This led to some sulimerans going to explore the galaxy in search of allies and support. Since the liberation of Sulimer, there have been talks about setting up a Stargate program.
  • Spacefaring: Sulimer had a reasonably well developed space program which was limited to sublight craft to support asteroid mining. During the Occupation, all of Sulimer’s spaceborne assets were destroyed, but they are rebuilding and supplementing their resources by reverse engineering Goa’uld and Challan technology.

Origins

Due to Sulimer being part of the Crystal Skull Network, it is beleived that Sulimer may have originally been seeded by the Furlings, suplimented by slaves brought to Sulimer by Tlāloc.

Historical records

Written Sulimeran history starts with the stories of the Court of Sulis, which was the period where the Sulimerans were uplifted by the God Sulis, and their Lords (Minerva, Senua, and Brigantia.). Sulis had seen the plight of the people living on this world, and wept for them. Sulis’ tears washed over the land and sank into the ground, from where the first Springs were found.

For roughly 700 years the Sulimerans lived peacefully alongside the Lords of Sulis, and were blessed with protection and good health. Eventually, Sulis fell out of favour with other (unnamed) gods, and was cast out from Sulimer, through the gateway to the heavens.

Following the fall of Sulis, there was a dark age for several centuries where several different cults, religions and factions waged war over Sulimer, before eventually the people rose up as one, and united against these dark forces.

During this time, when the Sulimerans rose up against the “dark gods” and “demons” (beleived to be Goa’uld attempting to seize Sulimer) that sought to controll them, they would submit the dark god to a torture, based on instructions left by Sulis. They would drown the god in a pool of specially prepared waters (Aqua Vitae). Then, they would banish the dark god to Hades, through the Exothyra.

Note: It has been discovered, through research into recovered Challan documents, that Hades was in fact Tuchalla. When the dark god would arrive on Tuchalla, they would revive, but be insane. The Challans had no way of protecting themselves from the arriving Goa’uld, and it is believed that the Challan nation-states arose from the domains of these insane Goa’uld.

Since then, the Sulimeran people spread out across the globe, but the desire to remain united kept them together and strong. The threat of outside forces wanting to split the nations of Sulimer apart worked to keep them together, and peaceful. There have been no major wars in the last millennia of recorded history, and a home has always been found for those whose views differ to the nation they currently live in.

Recent History

The Occupation of Sulimer

In September of 2015, the Central Army of Tuchalla, backed by Jaffa forces of Chaac, and their Holcan, launched an orbital invasion of Sulimer.

During the first couple of days, the forces concentrated on the minor regions that were farthest from Hallen. This also included several of the major space-launch facilities, and global communication systems. Many Sulimerans sought to flee the planet via ship, but the vast majority of these were shot down by the orbiting enemy ships, or captured.

By the end of the first week, the majority of Sulimer was under Challan occupation, with only Hallen and a couple of other regions holding out. At the start of the second week, the Stargate had been activated, and the population of Hallen began to evacuate through it. Those who fled to the Asteroid mining settlements were eventually able to escape the solar system onboard trading vessels that began to enter the system after the Tuchallans conquered Sulimer.

Before this point, the Sulimerans were unaware that the Stargate was a method of transportation. It has been recently uncovered that the gate was activated by Major John Oakley, in an attempt to save as many Sulimerans as he could.

It is notable that the Goa'uld forces did not utilise the Stargate to begin their invasion. They instead utilised Ring Platforms, deposited by specialised craft (no Ring Platforms were known to be located on Sulimer prior to the invasion).

Over the last few years, many Sulimerans have started to gather on the planet Kellimar. This planet was unpopulated and far away from where Sulimer was located. As such, it helped to shelter the Sulimerans from those seeking to exploit the scattered people. As more and more Sulimerans have gathered, they have rekindled their civilisation and are seeking to find a way back home.

Since the Sulimerans fled their homeworld, they have also started to suffer in some ways from their lack of access to the Aqua Vitae. Whilst their advanced medical knowledge has helped them greatly, they are now having to work from a disadvantage. Their medical skills has helped in seeking refuge, work, and trading, and their help is often sought by those in need.
